Renuka Chowdhury Presses Centre to Fast-Track Long-Pending Greenfield Airport Project in Telangana
Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury has urged the Centre to immediately start work on the long-pending greenfield airport project in Telangana, citing completed feasibility studies, identified land in Palvancha, and the project’s importance for industrial growth, tourism, connectivity and regional security.
Raising the issue in the national capital, Chowdhury said the proposed airport has been stuck in limbo despite having crossed several key administrative and technical milestones over the past decade. She noted that the project’s initial feasibility report was prepared as early as 2016 and was followed by the required recommendations and approvals, creating expectations that construction would soon begin.
According to Chowdhury, progress picked up again in 2024 when around 950 acres of land were officially identified at Palvancha for the airport. A pre-feasibility study was subsequently conducted by the Airports Authority of India, a process that was completed in 2025. However, she expressed concern that nearly a year after the study’s completion, no visible work has started on the ground.
Highlighting the broader significance of the project, Chowdhury pointed out that the Kothagudem region hosts several industrial hubs, collectively providing employment to nearly 23,000 people. She said a functional airport would significantly improve business connectivity, reduce travel time, and make the region more attractive for future investment.
She also underlined the airport’s potential to boost tourism, particularly by improving access to the revered Bhadrachalam temple, a major religious destination in Telangana. In addition, she argued that enhanced air connectivity in the area would contribute to stronger border security and serve the needs of residents in a region that is both industrially active and culturally significant.
Chowdhury called on the Centre to move beyond studies and paperwork and take decisive action to launch the project without further delay. She said timely execution of the greenfield airport would not only fulfill long-standing regional demands but also reflect a serious commitment to balanced infrastructure development and inclusive growth in Telangana.
